Service areas

Slightly confusing as Motional is running two services in Las Vegas, one with Via, one with Lyft/Uber.

"The fleets for both services will be separate" - Source: https://techcrunch.com/2022/02/24/motional-and-via-launch-free-autonomous-ride-hail-service-in-las-vegas/

Motional describe this as a "soft launch" ahead of full launch in Las Vegas in 2023.

Motional/Lyft

Service suspended May 2024 - Source: https://techcrunch.com/2024/05/07/motional-delays-commercial-robotaxi-plans-amid-restructuring/

A wider service area (than Motional/Via) as if your route request doesn't match what can be served by a robotaxi, you will be allocated a Lyft vehicle with a human driver.

"Catch an all-electric Motional IONIQ 5 autonomous vehicle (AV) when traveling between popular locations on the Las Vegas strip. Simply visit the Lyft app and opt-in to accept an autonomous ride"

"You’ll get a clean, comfortable self-driving car that can fit a maximum of 3 adults (including yourself). And since the trunk is used for the car’s technology, this ride won’t have space for luggage just yet." - Source: https://autonomous.lyft.com/riders/

"Your Lyft app makes it easy to get from downtown to the Arts District to the Las Vegas sign all in a self-driving ride. Just use Lyft within the current service area. If a Motional self-driving car is nearby, it’s yours to experience."

  • Motional and Lyft to begin transporting public passengers in the IONIQ 5 robotaxis starting in 2022 and will scale to a full-fledged commercial launch in 2023

  • Las Vegas riders will see a fully customized self-driving experience in the Lyft app in addition to other Lyft options they are already familiar with

Motional/Uber

Customers in Las Vegas interested in taking a ride in a Motional robotaxi can visit the Uber app and select UberX or Uber Comfort Electric options for a chance to be matched with a Motional AV. If an autonomous vehicle is available to complete the trip, Uber will match the rider to the vehicle and they will receive an offer to opt-in before the autonomous trip is confirmed and dispatched to pick them up.
