Waymo

The first Waymo, all-electric Jaguar I-PACEs will arrive in Tokyo in early 2025. Our partner, Nihon Kotsu, Tokyo’s largest taxi company, will oversee the management and servicing of the Waymo vehicles. The companies are working closely together to train Nihon Kotsu’s team on operating vehicles equipped with Waymo's autonomous driving system. Initially, Nihon Kotsu drivers will operate the vehicles manually to map key areas of the Japanese capital, including Minato, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Chiyoda, Chūō, Shinagawa, and Kōtō.

Tier IV

TIER IV, a leader in autonomous driving technology, has successfully completed pilot tests for a robotaxi service in Tokyo, marking a pivotal move toward commercialization as of February 18, 2025. Conducted in Odaiba and Nishi-Shinjuku during late 2024, these trials showcase the potential for integrating self-driving taxis into Japan’s transportation infrastructure. Supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the tests highlight TIER IV’s efforts to refine operational design domains (ODDs) and address technical hurdles, paving the way for broader adoption of autonomous mobility solutions.

Testing Locations and Scale: The pilot spanned two key Tokyo districts—Odaiba in November 2024 and Nishi-Shinjuku in December 2024—covering a combined distance of 976 km across hundreds of rides

Monet Technologies

Monet Technologies, a Japanese mobility service firm partly owned by Toyota, plans to test a self-driving taxi service in Tokyo's Odaiba district, starting in July, people familiar with the matter said Sunday.

The test will start with Level 2 partially automated driving technology and will examine the feasibility of Level 4 technology that provides fully automated driving under certain conditions.

The robotaxi service, partly designed to address serious shortages of taxi drivers, will use vehicles based on Toyota's Sienna minivan.
